What is Sleep Disorder?
Sleep disorders are conditions that impair your sleep or prevent you from getting restful sleep and, as a result, can cause daytime sleepiness and other symptoms. Everyone can experience problems with sleep from time to time. However, you might have a sleep disorder if:

REM is a sleep state where the body loses muscle tone, there is irregular breathing and elevated blood pressure. However, there is high brain activity when dreaming occurs.
For a patient with REM sleep behavior disorder the loss of muscle tone is incomplete leading to the characteristic symptoms.
REM sleep behavior disorder should not be confused with sleep walking and other disorders.
In sleep walking the person is confused after the episode and cannot recall his or her actions. However, in REM disorder the person easily wakes up and can recall vividly his or her actions.
Symptoms
Symptoms include:
Talking and laughing
Frightening dreams
Remembering the dream episode vividly
Limb movement such as kicking, arm flailing and jumping from the bed
Causes
Occurs due to malfunctioning of the nerve pathways in the brain which control our movement during the REM sleep state. The exact cause is unknown.
The risk factors include:
Gender - being male and over 50 years
Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia
Narcolepsy – increased daytime sleeping
Drug withdrawal e.g. alcohol, tricyclic antidepressants
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on the medical history and symptoms.
To evaluate for presence of REM disorder.
Overnight monitoring of sleep, muscle and brain activity. Facilitates in differentiating REM sleep disorder from other disorders.
Treatments
Treatment includes medication and improving sleep habits.
